Crymlyn Wetland (Bog) Data

Bonymaen, Swansea, Wales.

Real-Time Soil Data Artwork

Below we present a live data-driven artwork that visualises real-time microbial soil voltage readings. Custom-built sensors compare the biological activity in the Crymlyn Bog Wetland—Wales’s largest carbon sink—with readings from contaminated and undeveloped soil at the Mount Zion Chapel garden in Bonymaen.

This comparative display is designed to highlight the often-overlooked value of wetland ecosystems. By contrasting soil vitality between these two sites, the artwork invites public engagement and encourages local businesses and communities to recognise the ecological significance of undervalued green spaces.

This tech-based environmental artwork is a collaboration between artist Glenn Davidson and Paul Granjon of zprod.org. Special thanks to Gareth and the Natural Resources Wales (NRW) Life Quake team—regulars at the Crymlyn Visitor Centre—whose support made the hosting of the receiver box, power supply, and web access possible.

Refinements in the resilience of software and new graphite mesh sensors now clearly show
mounting activity and life in the wetland compared to the relative health of the periurban soil sample.
